Privacy Policy
1. Who we are and what this covers
This policy explains how Work Onward Inc. ("See", "we", "us") handles personal information in the See app for iPhone, the See website, the pages at see.hiretahoe.com, our emails and notifications, and related services (together, the "Service"). It applies to job seekers, employers, referrers, event attendees and visitors. It does not cover other companies' sites that we link to, or what employers and other members do with information after they receive it. Our Terms of Use also apply.
Address: Work Onward Inc., 124 E 14th St, New York, NY 10003. Email: info@workonward.com.
2. Information we collect
Information you give us
| What | Examples |
|---|---|
| Account | Email address, name, the email you sign in with, or the private relay address Apple gives us. Employers: work email on a company domain, job title, phone (optional), profile photo. |
| Profile (job seekers) | Headline, education (degree, major, school, graduation date, optional GPA), experience, skills, target roles, location and relocation preferences, availability, desired pay range (never salary history), languages, security clearance (optional), LinkedIn profile link. |
| Work authorization | Whether you can work in the US now and whether you will need sponsorship. If you choose, your status (for example F-1 OPT, STEM OPT, H-1B), work permit dates, unemployment days used and similar details. |
| Applications and screening answers | The profile snapshot you share when you apply, and answers to an employer's screening questions. |
| Messages | Conversations, interview slot choices, and cards you send. Message content is encrypted at rest. |
| Community | Posts, comments, poll votes, reports, and the anonymous handle and tags you choose. |
| Referrals | Requests, pitches, notes, outcomes, and a referrer's weekly limit and preferences. |
| Employers and companies | Company details, jobs, hiring team, notes and scorecards about applicants, saved searches, talent pools, events. |
| Contacting us | What you send to support or in a report. |
Information from other sources
- Sign in with Apple. Apple gives us a unique ID and the name and email you choose to share.
- LinkedIn, if you connect it. Only your name, verified email, profile photo and language. We copy the photo to our servers, discard LinkedIn's access token after the import, and never receive your connections, posts or work history.
- Your work email domain. To verify employers and referrers we check the domain, public registration data and mail records. After verification we keep a scrambled (keyed hash) code for the email, not a usable copy of it.
- Public data. Company pages can show H-1B approval and labor condition data published by the US government (USCIS and the Department of Labor).
- Other members, who may refer you, message you, report content or mention you.
Information collected automatically
- Device and connection: device name and model, iOS version, app version, push notification token, IP address, user agent, and an Apple App Attest key that helps us tell genuine copies of the app from fakes.
- Use of the app: screens viewed, features used, searches and filters (as events), and settings, such as whether notifications are on.
- Diagnostics: crash and performance reports.
- Location: only the city and state you type and an approximate place from your IP address for security. We do not collect precise location.
- Calendar feed (optional). If you turn it on, we create a private link containing the titles, times and video or location links of events you RSVP to or host, and your scheduled interviews and office hours. Anyone with the link can read it, so keep it private. You can rotate it, and it is deleted with your account.
What we never collect
Social Security number, A-number, SEVIS ID, passport numbers, images of visas or EAD cards, date of birth, salary history, race, religion, gender, country of citizenship, health information, precise location, or biometric identifiers (such as fingerprints or face scans). We do not collect resumes or files from job seekers. Photos come from LinkedIn (job seekers) or from employers who upload their own.
3. How we use information
- Provide the Service: create accounts, show jobs and profiles, send applications, deliver messages and notifications, run referrals and events, and keep your Work Authorization Center up to date.
- Verify and keep people safe: verify employers and referrers, detect scams, spam, impersonation and abuse, enforce rate limits, review reports and handle appeals.
- Match and search: recommend jobs, rank talent search results, and show why a match was made.
- Communicate: send codes, the welcome email, account and safety notices, and (unless you turn them off) reminders, alerts and digests. Welcome and account messages are sent from holly@mail.hiretahoe.com; replies go to info@workonward.com.
- Improve and secure See: measure what works, fix bugs, prevent fraud and protect our systems.
- Meet legal duties: respond to lawful requests, keep required records and enforce our terms.
We do not use your information for advertising, we do not build advertising profiles, and we do not use your information to decide on credit, insurance, housing or similar matters.
4. How we share information
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We share it only as follows.
- At your direction. When you apply, message, ask for a referral or let employers search for you, the people you choose receive the information the feature needs, as your visibility settings allow (section 5).
- Service providers that process data for us under contracts that limit their use of it: Microsoft Azure (hosting, storage, backups and AI processing, see section 7); Apple (push notifications and Sign in with Apple); our email delivery provider; and LinkedIn if you connect your account.
- Legal and safety. To comply with law, subpoenas or court orders, to protect people from serious harm, or to protect our rights and the Service. We tell you first when the law allows.
- Business changes. If we are part of a merger, financing, acquisition or sale of assets, information may transfer under this policy's protections. We will tell you if the policy would change.
- Aggregated or de-identified information that cannot reasonably identify you, such as overall usage counts. We commit not to re-identify it.
5. Who sees what
| Information | Who can see it |
|---|---|
| Name, photo, headline, education, skills, target roles | Employers (if "Visible to employers" is on) and other job seekers (if "Visible to other candidates" is on). |
| Two answers: can you work in the US now, will you need sponsorship | Employers who can see your profile. |
| Your exact status and dates | Employers only if "Employers can search by my work-authorization status" is on (it starts on, with a notice), and only the details you choose to share. Other job seekers only if you turn that on (it starts off). |
| Email address | An employer sees it only after you apply or reply to them. |
| Applications | The employer you applied to and its hiring team. We store a snapshot of what you shared. |
| Messages | The people in the conversation. Our staff do not read messages, except as needed to review a report, investigate abuse, secure the Service or comply with law. |
| Community posts | Members who can read that channel. Employers cannot see job-seeker-only channels. Posts show your anonymous handle, not your name, unless you choose "Post as yourself". |
You can hide your profile from employers altogether, or from specific companies (such as your current employer). A person you block cannot see your profile or message you.
The anonymous community
Your handle is linked to your account only in a separate, encrypted record. Other members and employers cannot see the link. Verified tags (such as "Verified at" a company) appear only when at least 25 verified members from that company are on See, so a tag cannot single you out. We unmask a handle only to comply with legal process or to prevent imminent serious harm, with approval from two authorized people, and we log it. Once you share something publicly, others may copy it, and we cannot take back what they have copied.
6. Work authorization and other sensitive information
Citizenship and immigration status, and the content of messages, are "sensitive" under some state laws. We handle your work authorization this way:
- We ask only two questions of everyone: whether you can work in the US now, and whether you will need sponsorship now or later. Anything beyond that is optional and up to you.
- By turning on or leaving on the setting that lets employers search by status, you consent to employers filtering by exact status. You can turn it off any time in Settings. Turning it off does not erase information employers already received through an application.
- We use sensitive information only to provide the features you ask for, keep the Service secure, and prevent fraud and abuse. We do not use it for advertising or to infer other characteristics about you.
- Work authorization details and message content are encrypted at rest with keys specific to you or the conversation.
- We keep an audit log of employer searches that use a status filter (who, when, and the query), so we can answer legal questions and investigate misuse.
See provides general information about work authorization dates. It is not legal advice.
7. Automated tools and AI
We use automated tools to run See:
- Language models (Microsoft Azure OpenAI) turn a recruiter's plain-English search into filters, help draft job descriptions, polish a pitch when you ask, check posts and comments for safety, and create search embeddings from profile and job text. Names, photos, dates and work authorization status are left out of the text we embed. We send these requests through our Azure account; Microsoft processes them for us and, under our configuration, may process them in data centers outside the United States. Microsoft states that it does not use data sent to Azure OpenAI to train its models.
- Safety classifiers look at messages, posts and job ads for scams, harassment and spam. They can add a warning, limit reach, queue content for human review or hold it. You can appeal decisions about your own content or account in the app.
- Match scores and rankings show employers how well a profile fits a job or search, with the reasons. They never use protected traits, and a work-authorization filter never ranks people higher or lower. They are tools for people. See does not make hiring decisions and does not use automated tools to make or replace an employer's decision to hire, reject or pay someone. Employers make those decisions.
Because of that design, we do not offer a separate opt-out of automated decision-making for hiring decisions. If you think a score or ranking is wrong, you can ask us to review it using the contact details below.
8. Cookies, tracking and signals
- The app does not use advertising identifiers, third-party advertising SDKs or cross-app tracking. Our Apple Privacy Manifest declares that See does not track you.
- The websites (including this page) use no advertising cookies and no analytics cookies. The See website saves your Light or Dark choice in your browser's local storage.
- "Do Not Track" and Global Privacy Control. Because we do not track you across other sites or sell or share your information, we treat these signals the same as every visitor. We honor opt-out preference signals such as Global Privacy Control.
9. How long we keep information
| Information | How long |
|---|---|
| Email sign-in codes | Expire in 10 minutes; deleted within about a day. |
| In-app notifications | 90 days. |
| Search and AI request logs | 30 to 90 days, with personal data removed where we can. |
| Raw usage events | 13 months, then only totals. |
| Applications and employer hiring records | Up to two years after a decision, then deleted or anonymized. Employers may keep their own records longer as the law requires of them. |
| Moderation and report records | Up to two years. |
| Security audit log | Up to seven years, including the search audit described above. |
| Your account and profile | Until you delete your account. |
| Deleted accounts | 30-day grace period (you can cancel), then your data is deleted from our systems. Encrypted backups expire within 35 days. We keep information we must keep by law, or to handle a dispute or enforce our terms. |
10. Security and breaches
We protect information with encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest, field-level encryption for work authorization details, messages and anonymous handle records, short-lived device-bound sign-in tokens, rate limits, access controls and logging, and servers on encrypted storage in the United States. No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects your personal information, we will tell you and the authorities as the law requires. For example, New York residents must be told within 30 days of discovery, and California residents "in the most expedient time possible." Please keep your Apple ID and email account secure.
11. Your choices and rights
Choices in the app
- Edit or remove profile information and change visibility settings (Profile and Settings).
- Turn notifications, digests and the calendar feed on or off. Every email has controls, and you can turn push off in iOS Settings. We still send essential account and safety messages.
- Disconnect LinkedIn, which deletes the LinkedIn-sourced photo.
- Download your data and delete your account in Settings, Account.
Rights under US state privacy laws
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to: know and access the personal information we hold about you; get a portable copy; correct inaccurate information; delete your information; opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information and of targeted advertising (we do none of these); limit the use of sensitive personal information (we use it only as described in section 6); and not be treated unfairly for using your rights.
How to use your rights. Use the in-app tools, or email info@workonward.com from the address on your account. We may ask you to confirm it is you, such as with a one-time code to your account email. You can use an authorized agent; we may ask for written proof of their authority and to confirm your identity with you. We respond within 45 days, and may extend once by 45 more days with notice. We may decline a request when the law allows, for example when we must keep data, and we will explain why. Appeals: if we decline, you may appeal by replying to our decision, and we answer within 60 days. If you are still unsatisfied, you can contact your state attorney general. We do not charge for requests, except where the law lets us for excessive or repetitive ones.
Employers and other members who received your information become responsible for it. Deleting your account does not delete copies they have lawfully saved, such as a hiring record.
12. California notices
This section applies to California residents under the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the CPRA ("CCPA"), including job applicants and employer staff who use See. We provide it as a notice at collection. In the past 12 months we collected the categories below, from the sources in section 2, for the purposes in section 3.
| CCPA category | What it is for See | Disclosed for a business purpose to |
|---|---|---|
| Identifiers | Name, email, anonymous handle, IP address, device identifiers, push token | Service providers; people you choose |
| Customer records (Cal. Civ. Code 1798.80(e)) | Name, education, employment information, phone (employers, optional) | Service providers; people you choose |
| Characteristics of protected classifications | Work authorization and immigration status, if you provide them (also treated as sensitive) | Service providers; employers as your settings allow |
| Internet or network activity | App usage events, interactions, diagnostics | Service providers |
| Geolocation (not precise) | City and state you enter; approximate location from IP | Service providers; people you choose |
| Audio, electronic or visual information | Profile photo | Service providers; people you choose |
| Professional or employment information | Experience, skills, applications, hiring notes | Service providers; employers you apply to |
| Education information | Degree, major, school, graduation date | Service providers; people you choose |
| Inferences | Match scores, recommendations, interests | Service providers; employers (match scores) |
| Sensitive personal information | Immigration status you provide; the contents of messages, which we transmit and store for you | Service providers; people you choose |
- Sale and sharing. We have not sold or shared personal information (as the CCPA defines those terms) in the past 12 months, and we have no actual knowledge of selling or sharing the personal information of anyone under 16. Giving information to an employer because you asked us to is not a sale.
- Sensitive personal information. We use it only for purposes the CCPA allows without a "Limit the Use" link: providing the services you request, security and fraud prevention, and quality maintenance. We do not use it to infer characteristics.
- Retention. See section 9.
- Your CCPA rights are in section 11. You also have the right to correct information, and to know the categories of third parties we disclose to (service providers listed in section 4).
- Automated decision-making. See does not use automated decision-making technology to make or replace significant decisions, such as hiring, about you (section 7).
- Shine the Light (Civil Code 1798.83). We do not disclose personal information to third parties for their direct marketing. You can ask us to confirm this by email.
- California Online Privacy Protection Act. See section 8 for how we treat Do Not Track.
- Minors. See is only for people 18 and older.
13. Other states
Residents of Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Texas, Oregon, Montana, Iowa, Delaware, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Tennessee, Minnesota, Maryland, Indiana, Kentucky, Rhode Island and other states with privacy laws have the rights in section 11 and can use the same methods. Where a state requires your consent to process sensitive data such as immigration status, we ask for it when you provide it, and you can withdraw it by turning off status visibility, removing the information or deleting your account. Nevada residents may ask us not to sell their information; we do not sell it.
New York. We follow the New York SHIELD Act's requirement to keep reasonable safeguards and notify New Yorkers of breaches. We do not collect biometric identifiers. New York City employers may use automated tools covered by NYC Local Law 144; see section 7 and our Terms.
Illinois. We do not collect biometric identifiers or information covered by the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act.
14. Employers and candidate information
Employers who use See are separate businesses. They decide what to do with the information they receive and must follow privacy and employment laws, including giving applicants any notices the law requires. Our Terms limit how employers may use candidate information: only to evaluate and hire people, never to sell it, scrape it, or use it for credit, insurance, housing or similar decisions. See is not a consumer reporting agency and does not provide background checks or consumer reports. Information on See must not be used as one.
15. Visitors from outside the US
See is built for people in the United States. If you use it from another country, you understand that your information will be processed and stored in the United States and in other places where our providers work (section 7), where privacy laws may differ from yours.
16. Age limit
See is for people 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has an account, write to us and we will delete it.
17. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. We will change the date at the top, and for material changes we will tell you in the app or by email before they take effect, and ask for consent when the law requires it.
